Bruce Mathew MacKenzie Obituary

Bruce MacKenzie was born at the Union Hospital in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on June 22nd, 1952 - to Robert and Margaret (Booth) MacKenzie. They lived in Readlyn, Saskatchewan until Bruce was 9, at which time the family relocated to Sundre, Alberta.

After high school graduation, Bruce left home to proudly serve with the Calgary Police Service. He started out as a Constable, then advanced to Senior Traffic Investigator, focusing on ‘hit & runs’. One of his main claims to fame was finding Dr. Grant MacEwan’s ‘hit & runner’. It was during this season that Bruce married Krisandra Yoos of Olds, Alberta. They were blessed with 2 sons - Ryan and Gavin.

In the early spring of 1980 - pursuing a shared dream of self-employment - Bruce retired from the Police Service. He moved the family to B.C., having invested in a small resort and marina at Anglemont, B.C., on beautiful Lake Shuswap. But, only months later, both the dream and the fledgling business were obliterated in the wake of Mount St. Helens’ widespread environmental and economic devastation. The MacKenzies once again became Alberta residents, and Bruce began a new career in transportation - specializing in long-haul, oversized loads.

Ten years later, Bruce again suffered great personal loss through divorce. With 2 sons to raise, he transitioned to driving for D&D livestock, hauling cattle closer to home. Then, at the age of 44, Bruce suffered a heart attack and reluctantly exchanged driving his beloved 18-wheeler for professionally brokering freight. And it was very evident to all that, whatever his contribution to the movement of goods - Bruce became known as a highly valued and much sought-after consultant/contractor in the industry.

In February of 1999, Bruce was working under contract to Tri-Plus brokerage in Calgary. The company interviewed someone for a brokering position and invited her to ‘shadow’ Bruce while she considered the job. Her name was Rhonda Cameron. The rest is history, as roses began to bloom again for both Bruce and Rhonda, and they were married on February 25, 2000.

Quite a unique variety of interests and hobbies occupied Bruce’s time and attention. He played acoustic, electric, and 12-string guitar. He watched more flying shows than anything else, although never took a lesson in the air (but he for sure knew how to confidently operate the flight simulator that Rhonda had given him one Christmas). He loved visiting with friends about flying, trucking adventures, and theological issues - in person or on social media. He was never, ever too busy to spend time visiting with his beloved siblings, children, and grandchildren. Bruce was fascinated with golfing, even though he was known to be terrible at it (after one par-3 game, he and Rhonda decided to stick with driving ranges. She says they were both even worse at that!). He loved cutting his stamp-sized lawn(s) with his 6 ¼-horse, rear-bag, self-propelled gas mower, refusing to get rid of it because it was ‘fully paid for and his forever.’ He also loved boating, fishing, and camping. But Bruce’s all-time personal favorite thing was swimming - standing in the river up to his neck all day (says Rhonda), ‘and going home with his head burned to a crisp’. All of these things were truly ‘Bruce’, but among his loved ones and friends, he reigned supreme as Barbeque King - with a remarkable gift for grilling world-class steaks.

Bruce was a man of strong faith. As a young child he attended the United Church with his parents. In his teen years, through friends, the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Sundre became his ‘church-home.’ One afternoon in that season, he was invited by friends to a Full Gospel Businessmen Luncheon. It was there that Bruce heard, comprehended, and embraced the New Testament gospel story of Jesus Christ. That day, he fully responded, by inviting Jesus to become his personal Savior and Lord - and committed to following and serving Him for the rest of his born days. Since that time, Bruce was a member of the Full Gospel Businessmen Cowboy Chapter - and also enjoyed attending church service in a number of different Christian traditions. At all times during the ensuing years, Bruce’s biggest passion was his relationship with his Lord.

In their 40’s, Bruce and Rhonda attended the Lake Bonavista Baptist Church in Calgary, where he received believer’s full immersion baptism, and where he and Rhonda helped in the church’s Alpha outreach - by Rhonda leading the singing-time while Bruce provided guitar accompaniment. He loved reading & studying the Word of God. He prioritized sharing its Truth with anyone who wanted to listen (and sometimes others who didn’t!). He was convinced that this alone is life’s most critical issue, and greatly desired that everyone find the same enduring joy and peace that he had experienced through his faith. Bruce’s greatest happiness was always when other people entered into personal faith in the God of the Bible, and chose to become Jesus followers.

On April 3, 2026, following a lengthy struggle with his weakening heart, Bruce MacKenzie was welcomed into the presence of the Lord - from his home at Autumn Grove Seniors’ Residence in Innisfail, Alberta. Present at his passing were: Bruce’s sister, son, and daughter in law; and Rhonda, his soul-mate and best friend, who reflects that, “A good man, good husband, good father, and good friend went home on Good Friday.”

Bruce is survived by: his cherished wife, Rhonda; sister Bonnie MacKenzie (retired member of Calgary Police Service); sons Ryan (Lisa) and Gavin (Alisa); granddaughters Demareece and Bronwynn; step-daughter Jenifer Cameron-Heaton (George) Lane; step-son Jonathan Cameron (Monica); step-grandsons Jenson and Joseph; step-granddaughters Sonja, Kaitlin, Claire, and Lily; nephew Rob, niece Connie, great-nephew Cody (Shae), great-great niece Chelsea, great-great nephew Madden, great-great niece Carissa; many cousins and in-laws; and a host of personal friends.

A Celebration of Life and Interment for Bruce will be held at the Innisfail Cemetery on May 2, 2026, with Rev. Pastor Jonathan Klein officiating. Attendants are advised to bring lawn chairs to this combined service, in the absence of provided seating.
