Gloria Wakula Powney of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Center on July 18, 2026 at the age of 75 years.
Gloria was born and raised in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada on November 24, 1950. She grew up on a farm outside of Dauphin, Manitoba, and went to a Melton Country School before it closed, then on to Dauphin Collegiate Technical Institute DCTI for high school.
On November 22, 1969, Gloria Wakula married David Richard Powney in Dauphin, Manitoba, Canada. She had 3 children; Jeffrey David Powney was born in Dauphin. They moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1971 where she had Michael Anthony Powney, and then Raquel Lynn Powney. The family then moved to Brooks, Alberta in October of 1974.
Gloria held several different jobs in Brooks, AB, including Philpot Honey for about 3 years, Newell Vegetable plant for several years, McDonalds and a local dry cleaners for a couple years, Lakeside Meat Packing Plant, and then Dairy Queen, until she moved to Red Deer. She continued to work at the Dairy Queen in Red Deer until retiring in 2018.
Gloria attended the First Baptist Church in Dauphin and in Red Deer. In Brooks, the family attended Brooks United Church. Gloria later attended Immanuel Bible Chapel. When she moved to Red Deer, she attended Living Stones Church.
Gloria enjoyed doing aerobics and playing fast ball and slow pitch for sports. Her main hobbies as she got older were scrap booking and being with family. She moved to Red Deer to be closer to her kids, Raquel and Michael in 2012.
Gloria will be lovingly remembered by her children Jeff Powney (Tracie), Michael Powney (Deltra), Raquel Hicks (David); grandchildren Elijah Hicks, Taylor Churchwell, Ben Churchwell, Chelsea Hicks, Felix Powney, and Corwyn Powney; brothers and sisters Martin and Darlene Wakula, Patricia and Stan Mullen; and she will be remembered by numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, and friends. She was Predeceased by her father and mother Metro and Mary Wakula; brothers and sisters Metro and Joanne Wakula, and Lilly and Murray Gray.
A Memorial Service will be held on August 8, 2026 at 1:00 pm at Living Stones Church in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. https://cpff.ca/
