Obituary of Dennis Mathias Manderscheid

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dennis Mathias Manderscheid, of Red Deer, AB, on February 25, 2025, at the age of 76 years. Dennis passed away at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and devotion.

 

Dennis was born on December 27, 1948, in Humboldt, Saskatchewan, and spent his childhood on the family homestead in Saskatchewan. After moving to Alberta as a young adult, Dennis pursued various working opportunities, including a role as a courier, which he took on after purchasing his first Suzuki motorcycle. Over the years, Dennis wore many hats throughout his career, including working with the Chuckwagon Concession in the 1970s, a welder, and as a home care aide.

 

In 1996, Dennis returned to school and attended Vancouver Community College, where he completed the Residential Care Attendant Course. Dennis went on to join the BC Cancer Agency in 2000, working alongside Deepak and Doug. Though Dennis attempted retirement several times, his love for his work and the people he worked with kept him going. He remained with the Cancer Agency for 24 years, finally retiring on March 18, 2024.

 

His good friend and coworker, Deepak, fondly recalls Dennis as "a character" who brought joy to those around him. "The stuff that would come out of his mouth would make us laugh hysterically."

 

Dennis was blessed with a lifelong friendship with Roy, his best friend of 62 years. Together, Dennis and Roy navigated life’s challenges and celebrated its triumphs. Dennis was also fortunate enough to reconnect with Mary Jane Manderscheid, his adolescent sweetheart and true love. Their reunion brought them great happiness in their later years, and they were joyfully married.

 

Dennis was a proud grandfather and took immense joy in spending time with his three grandchildrenJustin EckenswillerBrett Eckenswiller, and Samantha Eckenswiller. He was also a proud great-grandfather to Zane Mooney. Dennis was often seen wearing his "Greatest Grandpa Ever" t-shirt, a true testament to his love for his family.

 

A devout Roman Catholic throughout his life, Dennis remained committed to his faith, finding strength in his spiritual beliefs.

 

Dennis will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Jane Manderscheid; his children, Dale Manderscheid and Shelly Eckenswiller; grandchildren, Justin EckenswillerBrett Eckenswiller, and Samantha Eckenswiller; great-grandchild, Zane Mooney; siblings Donald of Edmonton, Duane of Red Deer, David and Ronald of BC; sister, Diane of Langley, BC; and his best friend, Roy of Langley, BC.

 

Dennis was predeceased by his parents, Leonard Manderscheid and Phyllis Ernest and grandparents, Marie and Dominic Manderscheid. Dennis will be forever missed by all who knew him and will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.

 

In following with Dennis’s wishes, a private family celebration of his life will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, PO Bag 5030, Red Deer  AB   T4N 4E7.
