Obituary of Joyce Shermaine Smith
Joyce Shermaine Smith of Red Deer County passed away at the Red Deer Hospice on March 23, 2025, at the age of 85 years.
Joyce loved to explore, especially around Alberta. Whenever she heard about an interesting place, she would jump in her van and set off on a weekend road trip. It was on her bucket list to see Canada, and at 80, she traveled solo across the country armed only with a few paper maps and her adventurous spirit—no cell phone, no GPS.
Mom kept up with current affairs, mostly through CBC Radio. She was deeply interested in the world around her, always gathering knowledge—whether it was recipes, jokes, words of wisdom, or the latest news. Quick-witted and sharp, she had a wicked sense of humor that kept everyone on their toes.
A self-taught and talented musician, Mom played the piano, accordion, harmonica, and harpsichord by ear. She deeply appreciated the talents of others, whether they were seasoned musicians or beginners just finding their way.
Above all, Mom’s greatest joy in life was her family. She loved preparing meals, especially when it meant bringing loved ones together around the table. She poured her heart into every gathering, delighting in both the planning and the time spent with those she cherished. Her infectious positivity, generosity, and kindness made her a joy to be around.
She will be deeply missed, but the many wonderful memories and valuable life lessons she instilled in us will live on.
Mom had a great zest for life and lived it to the fullest. A beautiful soul, a life well lived.
Mom, we love you.
