Vernon Gulbransen

Obituary of Vernon Gunnar Gulbransen

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Vernon Gunnar Gulbransen, beloved husband of Virley Gulbransen, on April 7, 2025, in Red Deer, Alberta.

Vern was born in Hughenden, Alberta, to Gunner and Ruth Gulbransen. As a preacher’s child, his early years were spent in various communities, including Hughenden and Amisk, AB; Weldon, SK; and Vancouver and Keremeos, BC. After completing Grade 11 at Pigeon Lake, AB, Vern worked briefly before returning to graduate from Grade 12 at Camrose Lutheran College. He later earned a diploma from NAIT’s Electronics Engineering program. In 1966, Vern married Virley Sampson of Irma, AB, his partner and love for 58 years. Their journey took them from Edmonton to Inuvik, Fort Nelson, and Grande Prairie with the Department of Transportation before they settled in Red Deer in 1972.

Vern was a vibrant, creative soul whose energy touched every part of his life. A diligent worker, he found joy in building—homes, boats, a cabin, refurbishing a vintage car, and developing subdivisions. Alongside his friend and brother-in-law, Wayne Austring, Vern opened Radio Shack in Parkland Mall, marking the start of their decades-long partnership in various business ventures. Vern and Virley traveled the world together, creating cherished memories over their many years of marriage. Above all, Vern’s heart belonged to his family. His son, Davin, was his pride and joy. Vern spent decades of summers cheering at Davin’s baseball games-locally, at Provincials, Westerns, Nationals, in Indiana, Florida, Sweden, Holland and Australia, earning the nickname “Captain Encouragement.” His love deepened further as “Pop Vern” to his grandchildren, “L’il Liv” and “Big Luke man”, who were the lights of his life.

A man of deep faith, Vern loved his Lord and Savior, sharing his beliefs quietly but boldly. His family finds comfort in the hope of reuniting with him and other loved ones in Heaven.

Vern is survived by his beloved wife, Virley; son Davin (Kristen); grandchildren Olivia and Luke; sister Gloria (Paul) Holomis and their family; sister-in-law Melba Veer and her family; and brother-in-law Wayne Austring. He is also remembered by the family of his late brother Del, as well as extended family and many dear friends.

Vern was predeceased by his parents, Gunner and Ruth; brother Del; sister-in-law Gayle Austring; brother-in-law Brian Veer; grandparents; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A celebration of Vern’s life will be held this summer, with details to follow. Interment will take place at Amisk Park Cemetery in Amisk, Alberta.
