It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Herbert “Herb” Arnold Lavergne on May 30, 2025. He passed away peacefully at the age of 85.
Herb was born on July 28, 1939, in Ottawa, Ontario. He will be missed by his wife Carol; two children Steven (Heather), Debbie (Steve); and by his four grandchildren Scott, Amanda, Caige (Matt), and Megan (Ryan). He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, friends, colleagues, and his extended family in the Quebec area.
Herb was an army brat and moved several times during his childhood. During Herb’s teenage years, he was a member of the military and worked on airplane engines. He was in Camp Borden, Ontario, when he met the love od his life, Carol Struckett. They were married on December 2nd, 1961. Soon after that, they welcomed their son, Steven Robert, in 1963, and their daughter, Debra Christine, in 1965.
Herb and Carol set up their life in Ontario, but moved many times for Herb’s work. Herb supervised the grand openings of popular restaurants, such as the Red Barn and the Ponderosa franchises, and many others throughout the province. Herb and the family finally settled in Scarborough, Ontario in 1971, and they stayed there for the next 12 years. Herb enjoyed the great outdoors; fishing, hunting, and camping in the Muskoka.
In 1981, the family made a trip out west to Alberta on vacation, and both Herb and Carol loved it. Herb thought it was the most beautiful place on earth. After returning back home to Ontario, Herb and Carol made the decision to sell their successful business, Lavark Enterprises Inc., and make the journey west. Another adventure was just starting for the family, as they packed up and made the move to Red Deer, Alberta in 1983.
Herb worked for the City of Red Deer for a number of years at the RCMP detachment. He loved his job and the people he met and remained there until he retired.
Herb had a love for music, always inspired by Buddy Rich. He was a drummer and had a passion for it. Herb became a member of the RCMP Bagpipe Marching Band and participated in many parades and shows across Alberta.
Herb was very active, humorous, and always made people laugh with his dry sense of humour. He cared deeply about his family.
When both Herb and Carol retired, they were quite adventurous and did a lot of travelling. This involved many road trips, cruises exploring Europe, and after that, they decided to buy a house in Lake Havasu, Arizona, where they enjoyed the warm weather and missed the harsh winters of Alberta for 10 years. They eventually sold the house in Lake Havasu, and afterwards Herb lived a quiet and peaceful life among family and friends.
Following Herb’s wishes, a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, 3942 50A Avenue, Red Deer, Alberta, T4N 4E7. Condolences to Herb’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Lavergne” in the subject line.
