With heavy hearts, the family of Lester Kenton Gillrie of Penhold, Alberta, announces his peaceful passing at the age of 79 on August 2, 2025, at the Innisfail Hospital, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on Sunday, March 31, 1946, in Didsbury, Alberta, Les was the eldest of six children to Kenton and Helen Gillrie. He spent his early years in Didsbury before moving with his family to Red Deer, where he met the love of his life, Gloria Sakowski - affectionately known as “Lovie.” Together, they built a life filled with hard work, love and laughter, raising three children while living, and moving, between Alberta and British Columbia.
Les was a passionate collector - if it had a motor, he was drawn to it. His love for cars began in his youth, working alongside his father in their garage. When he wasn’t covered in grease, he could be found singing with his mother, siblings, and friends during lively jam sessions. Music was a constant in his life, and he and Gloria shared a special joy in dancing together.
His collection grew to include snowmobiles, motorcycles, and RVs, and he passed on his mechanical knowledge to his children as they grew. When working on vehicles became more difficult, Les turned his attention to winemaking - another hobby he embraced with enthusiasm, much to the delight of friends and family.
Professionally, Les spent many years selling cars before transitioning to the RV industry. He served as the RV Service Manager at Southside Plymouth Chrysler, where he was respected for his expertise and dedication until his retirement.
Les will be lovingly remembered by his devoted wife of 60 years, Gloria Diane Gillrie; his children Doug Gillrie (Roxanne), Darrin Gillrie (Sue), and Carol Harty (Allan Young); his ten grandchildren—Zac (Emmy), Kaitlyn, Jacson, Adam, Cassandra, Kristina, Cole (Payton), and Tory; and his two great-grandchildren, Taven and Everleigh. He also leaves behind many cherished family members, friends, and acquaintances who will deeply miss his warmth, humor, and generous spirit.
Les’s legacy lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Penhold Memorial Hall, 1123 Fleming Avenue, Penhold, Alberta. In honor of Les’s vibrant personality, guests are encouraged to wear colorful clothing. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are gratefully appreciated as a tribute to his memory. Condolences to Les’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net. Please indicate “Gillrie” in the subject line.
