Carey Hilz Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we share that Carey Hilz passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 19, 2025. After battling cancer with tremendous courage and peace, he has gone to be with Jesus, his personal Lord and saviour.

Carey’s love endures in his wife, Susan Hilz, his children, Megan Cathcart (Ryan), Madison Seward (Blake), and Joshua Hilz (Megan), his cherished grandchildren, Mason Seward, Sarah Seward, and Daphne Cathcart, his parents, Edwin and Dawna Hilz, his siblings, Debbie Banek (Manfried), Kevin Hilz (Angela) and Rose-Anne Bishop (Jim), and many loved nephews and nieces. He joins his brother, Ryan Hilz, in rest.

Carey’s deep and abiding commitment to Christ was an inspiration to all who knew him. He loved the word of God and was a dedicated prayer warrior, following in the footsteps of his Grandma Hilz. His faith carried him through his final days, giving him peace beyond understanding.

Carey adored using his gift of music to love, uplift, and honour people. Never having had a lesson, his piano playing and songwriting was a kind of miracle and testament to his passion for people and creativity. He filled his home with beautiful music and it will be sorely missed, its absence a stirring reminder of loss. He also shared his love of 80s music, movies, and chess with his children and grandchildren.

Carey had a way with words. He loved to engage people in conversation and was willing to say the important things, giving speeches, toasts, and prayers, always with a focus on the blessings of God in his family. He used this gift to speak into the lives of young men through his mentorship and involvement with Coaching Boys into Men.

Of all his many endeavours and creative pursuits, including working in Human Resources and Employee Safety, he considered his greatest accomplishment to be his wife and children.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, October 27th at 1pm at Crossroads Church in Red Deer, where family and friends are invited to share memories and honour Carey’s remarkable life.

To honour Carey’s special bond with his grandson, the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Cure SMA Canada (curesma.ca/ways-to-give) to support ongoing research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Carey is and was deeply loved and will be deeply missed.
