Obituary of Hartley Howard Lemkey

Hartley Howard Lemkey of Red Deer, Alberta went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on May 22nd, 2021 at the age of 91 years. He passed peacefully while surrounded by family. Hartley was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1930. At a young age he learned to be the man of the house when his older brothers went to war, and learned to be resilient during the economic challenges of the depression. Despite not having an easy childhood, he nevertheless told endearing stories of his growing up years spent with his younger sister, Amy, whom he adored. His mother taught him at an early age to trust in the Lord. As a young man he worked for many years at Dominion Motors, Winnipeg. He met the love of his life, Johanna (Jo) Dalke, in 1961 and they married on May 19, 1962. They moved to Red Deer in 1975, where he began working at MGM Ford Lincoln, followed by 15 years as the business owner of Brite Way Cleaning Services. Hartley’s and Jo’s greatest happiness was being with their much loved children and grandchildren. They enjoyed serving the Lord, attending Deer Park Alliance Church and relating to friends there. Travelling, including their annual month in Victoria with friends, was a highlight. Camping together every summer for almost 50 years, until they no longer could manage, was treasured time in nature. Hartley’s yard work was completed with precision as were the many projects completed in his workshop. He also enjoyed singing in the church choir, and for a number of years with the Parkland Men’s Choir. Hartley’s family often heard his worshipful singing while playing the guitar, with his strong bass voice and twinkling blue eyes. He leaves to mourn, his wife, Johanna, and their two daughters, Cindy (Leo) Wheeler, Joanne (Tim) Allers, grandchildren Cassandra (Wheeler) and Dustin Born, Donovan and Hannah Wheeler, Ethan Allers, Blythe Allers and Tovin Allers, great grandchildren, Liesel Born and Maverick Wheeler, and numerous nieces and nephews. Hartley was predeceased by his siblings Arnold (Merel) Lemkey, Lawrence (Jean) Lemkey, Mrs. Esther Pappas, Mrs. Helen Stefansson, and Mrs. Amy (Jake) Dyck. A private family service has been held in celebration of his life. Memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International, https://gideons.ca/ . The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Extendicare Michener Hill for their kind and loving care. The nurses and staff went above and beyond during this difficult time. Condolences to Hartley’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
