Obituary of David J. Schurman
David J. Schurman
1941 - 2021
David (Dave), beloved husband of Karen Schurman (nee Riley) of Red Deer, Alberta, passed away on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at the age of 80 years.
Dave was born in Montreal and grew up in the English-speaking suburbs of Verdun and Dorval. His post-secondary education was at McGill University and Concordia University, where he received a Commerce degree in 1965. Dave earned his Chartered Accountant designation soon afterwards.
While working at Sun Life Insurance, Dave met his wife Karen with whom he shared 55 loving years. After several years of career development in Quebec, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island, Dave and Karen decided to make Camrose, Alberta their home for 14 years. It was here that they raised three children and Dave helped to lead Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC), where he served 23 years with the Alberta provincial government. During this time, he was also a member of the Camrose and Lacombe Lions Clubs and volunteered his time at many charitable organizations in the area.
Dave retired in 2003, moved to Red Deer in 2012, and continued to volunteer his time at the Lending Cupboard and Red Deer Hospital. Dave was an avid golfer and always enjoyed getting out to play a round with friends and family. Many mornings were spent on the links of the Camrose Golf Club and the River Bend Golf Course in Red Deer. Dave also had a passion for hockey – especially cheering on the Montreal Canadiens (aka “The Boys”). A hearty cheer would echo throughout the house whenever Montreal scored a goal. Dave also enjoyed making his own wine and dedicated a whole room in his basement to pursuing wine-making excellence.
Dave and Karen loved to travel and crisscrossed the US and Canada with their travel trailer. When winter arrived, a cruise was planned to escape the cold and see somewhere new. Even with all these great hobbies, being with family, especially grandchildren, was what Dave loved best. Any visits with grandchildren were extra-special and you knew by the smile on his face that there was nowhere else he would rather be.
Dave is survived by his loving wife Karen; children Susan, Mike (Dawn), and Bob (Jessica); five grandchildren, Hannah, Mack, Chloe, Matea, and Asher; sister Lynne Watkins (Rick); and many extended family members.
A celebration of Dave's life will be held at the River Bend Golf Course (3800 River Bend Drive, Red Deer, Alberta) on Thursday, October 7 from 1-4pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Red Deer Hospice Society, 99 Arnot Ave, Red Deer AB, T4R 3S6, or online here; or The Lending Cupboard, #1-7803 50 Ave, Red Deer AB, T4P 1M8, or online here, would be appreciated.
