Obituary of Michael William Mushins
Michael William Mushins made it just past his 71st birthday before passing away in the Red Deer Hospital on March 22, 2023.
Mike, or Michael (as he preferred in his last few months as it sounded more dignified) was born to Dorothy and Arthur Mushins on March 10, 1952 in South Shields, England. He emigrated with his family by ship in 1956 and settled in British Columbia. He grew up loving sports, from lacrosse to hockey. He even made the newspaper more than once for his abilities. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed mountaineering, hiking and running. He was also an excellent skier, making it look absolutely effortless. He did, however, break his pinky finger in his late 50's when he tried snowboarding for the first time and quickly went back to skiing. He passed on his proclivity for the outdoors and adventures to his family, spending family vacations camping, backpacking, and teaching them how to rock climb. Out of everything he enjoyed, he was most at peace and happy when he was sailing, and he spent many hours repairing various sailboats and sailing off the west coast, or at Sylvan Lake.
He had a long, successful career as a civil engineer until his retirement last year. He was proud of his work, and frequently told stories about the projects he was working on. However, he most enjoyed the work fishing trips.
He was loved by his family, who miss him dearly: his daughter, Aleicia; his son, Will; his daughter in-law Terri-Lynn; and their children Lincoln, Nautica, Evol, and Nevaeh. He leaves behind family and good friends, who have helped out so much during the past few months, especially his neighbors who I’m sure he would like to thank for keeping an ever-vigilant watch over his home and shoveling his walks.
His family would like to invite you to join us in a celebration of his life on April 2, 2023, from 1-3 pm at his residence. Condolences to Michael’s family may be emailed to meaningful@telus.net.
