Obituary of Thomas Brian Goodlet

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Thomas Brian Goodlet, on Monday, October 21st, 2024, just shy of his 86th birthday.  Brian was surrounded by his family, and the Palliative Care team at Red Deer Region Health Centre in Alberta.

Brian was born in 1938, the eldest of the four sons of James (Jim) Goodlet and Lillian (Lil). Brian grew up in Georgetown, Ontario and married the love of his life in 1961.  During his early career, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (briefly) before working for Algoma Steel in Sault Ste Marie, and then teaching middle-schoolers at Harrison Public School in Georgetown.

His father encouraged Brian to join the family business that he and two of his brothers eventually took over: Goodlet’s Home Hardware, Furniture and Appliances on Main Street in Georgetown.  At age 41, Brian changed careers becoming a financial planner and life insurance agent, which he did until his retirement in his seventies.

Brian was known by many for being a gentleman, intelligent, intrepid, persistent, committed to family and for being deeply in love with his wife of 56 years, Sheila Doreen (née Carney) of Norval, Ontario, whose death in 2017 broke all our hearts.

Brian was loved and cared for by his children, Carber Goodlet of Calgary, AB, Tiffany Goodlet (Drew Wilkinson) of Caledon, ON and Tanya Kitchen (Patrick) of Red Deer, AB; his seven grandchildren, Jayd, Kai, Shea, Nicholas, Alexander, Natasha and Simon; his brother Doug Goodlet (Doris); and his sister-in-law Brenda Goodlet. Brian is predeceased by his wife Sheila, his brothers Dave and Jim (Barb). Brian had many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly; and he was proud of his large, extended family, with whom he remained close – the Carneys and the Saunders. He leaves behind some dear friends, some of whom he had known since high school, as well as those from his home in Red Deer, Alberta at Three Robins.

Friends and family will be received at 10am at Noval United Church on Saturday, November 9th prior to the funeral for Brian at 11am ET.  A reception will follow the service at the church; the inurnment will be held in the afternoon.

Location: Norval United Church, 14015 Danby Road, Georgetown, ON, L7G 5S6

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial donations to any of these worthy, charitable organizations: Norval United Church, Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre – Palliative Care Unit, Alzheimer's Society of Canada or Fighting Blindness Canada.
